Beyonce Sued By Game Developer For $100 Million In Dropped Deal
By Ben Strauss
IndustryGamers has obtained court documents showing game developer Gate Five suing pop star Beyonce Knowles for her alleged breach of contract. The developer accuses Ms. Knowles of “[destroying] Gate Five’s business, and [driving] 70 people into unemployment, the week before Christmas.”
Gate Five is seeking $100 million from Ms. Knowles, as the title they had been working on was suddenly dropped after the pop star demanded higher compensation for the use of her likeness in Starpower: Beyonce. Gate Five claims that Beyonce pulled out of the deal “at a critical moment in the project’s development.”
The developer’s case cites egregious behavior on part of Beyonce, citing her actions as so “unscrupulous that her then manager (who is also her father) renounced them, while a senior executive of the company that agreed to finance the project condemned her conduct as ‘morally reprehensible.’”
The claim is seeking $6.7 million in lost direct investment on top of $100 million in potential profits from the title. The developer and Beyonce are currently working a confidentiality issue out, but the summons gives 20 days to appear before a New York City court.
